PLEASE NOTE: All CMIT modules have now been withdrawn,
and are unavailable for the 2010/11 academic year
These web pages and lecture notes are left as reference for those students
requiring CMIT modules to complete their programme only, and are not an
indication of modules currently offered.
Computing Project
MIT3106 - 15 credits
MIT3206 - 20 credits
MIT3306 - 30 credits
The module can be taken in either semester one or two, or over both semesters.
What is it?
As with the level two Computer Project, this module takes the form of independent study or dissertation.
The aim is for you to create a piece of work relating to information technology or IT in combination with an area of your main degree programme of study. You choose the subject area of the work, in consultation with the module tutor when you begin the module.
The work can be a traditional text-based dissertation presented in paper and electronic form or a combination of a practical element and written critique. For example, past projects have included:
- What can be learnt from children's art about graphical communication
- The digitisation of 78rpm jazz records
- A comparison of Internet and traditional marketing for tourism in Devon
- Web pages for a North Devon charitable transport organisation
- The impact of computers in music publishing
If you have already taken a level two Computer Project or are working on projects or dissertations elsewhere in the University, this project must be on a different subject.
The important difference between this and the level two Computer Project is that you will be expected to display a strong research element and critical academic depth in the project, and the presentation of the material must be in both an electronic and paper-based format.
Teaching/Learning Methods
You will learn largely under your own initiative, under the direction of the module tutor.
You will see the module tutor formally at arranged times each semester to discuss progress etc.
Additional supervision may be provided by other CMIT staff according to the area of your project - the module tutor will arrange this.
If the material of the project relates to your main degree area, you may be encouraged to seek comment or help from a suitable specialist from your School.
Assessment
The exact assessment requirements, including deadlines for submissions, will be agreed with the module tutor when you begin the module.
