Meaningful Markup: XML and Web Information
MIT3112 - 15 credits
MIT3212 - 20 credits
MITM212(A) - MA versions

XML is the future of the web; it's used to create more flexible languages than HTML, and can carry much more meaningful information. XML separates content and presentation, so that the same document can be viewed on high-resolution displays or mobile phones, and still appear designed for the medium. XML also allows the document author to create their own tags with meaningful names, incorporating semantics into the document structure.
This module is designed to build on the skills you've acquired in Aspects of Web Design (or your general web-design skills), and looks at modern website creation through the use of XML and its related technologies. You'll have the opportunity to create a website using scalable document management techniques, developing for a variety of browsing formats and creating 'house styles' using stylesheets and transformations. The module is practically based, looking at each technology from a 'how-to' perspective, whilst analysing the technologies usefulness and role in document management at each stage.
Schedule
The module runs throughout the second semester.
Classes for 2010 are scheduled for Tuesdays, 2pm to 4pm.
If you can't make these times, please let us know and we'll make alternative arrangements
Regular meeting times are normally scheduled in the first meeting, according to the year group's collective availablity.
